What is the basic salsa step?

The basic salsa step is a fundamental movement in salsa dancing, and it forms the foundation for many other salsa patterns and combinations. The basic step is a combination of quick steps and weight shifts that sync with the rhythm of the music. Here’s a basic breakdown:

  1. Start Position:
    • Stand with your feet together, weight evenly distributed on both feet.
    • Keep your posture upright, shoulders relaxed, and arms comfortably by your sides.
  2. Forward and Backward Movement:
    • On the first beat, step forward with your left foot.
    • On the second beat, bring your right foot to meet your left foot.
    • On the third beat, step backward with your right foot.
    • On the fourth beat, bring your left foot to meet your right foot.
  3. Side Movement:
    • On the fifth beat, take a side step to the left with your left foot.
    • On the sixth beat, bring your right foot to meet your left foot.
    • On the seventh beat, take a side step to the right with your right foot.
    • On the eighth beat, bring your left foot to meet your right foot.
  4. Repeating:
    • Repeat the sequence, starting again with a forward step on the next beat.
  5. Hip Movement:
    • As you step, allow your hips to move naturally, swaying to the rhythm of the music.

It’s important to note that salsa music is typically counted in “1-2-3, 5-6-7” beats, with the even beats (2, 6) often being emphasized. The basic step can be done in place or can involve traveling around
